Anyone who's ever enjoyed seeing Rob Lowe on TV or in the movies will really enjoy his memoirs. They present him as being much more down to earth than you might expect and include fascinating side stories about the movie biz. I had especially enjoyed seeing Lowe in the miniseries The Stand and the extra info he includes about that role would have been worth the entire purchase price for me. I appreciate the fact that he writes about himself as if he knows he has human flaws. This makes him seem honest, and that makes me like him even more than I already did. BTW if his books aren't perfect, if he goes off on tangents here and there, to me that said he wrote them himself, instead of using a ghostwriter, and it made me feel like I was really hearing Rob Lowe describing his memories. (If I had one criticism it would be that in the digital version the photos could have been placed better. Photos from the preceding chapter are placed next to the first page of the new chapter, and this is distracting.)

An original Brat Packer who could have led a typical Hollywood life (Demi Moore) of self importance, peaks and valleys, and something missing. And Lowe was clearly on his way to this life starting as a teen idol and all that comes with it. But somewhere after his infamous threesome with an underage girl, Lowe dries out and marries a solid, stable person which has led to an exceptional family life and career. Sure, most might consider it a disappointment considering how bright was the early star (a particular passage talks of his not being on a magazine cover for 10 years), but beneath the surface was a very intelligent man looking to escape and show the world there was more to him than a pretty face. And he was successful in this endeavor! And this book is the proof.
The structure of the book is general ramblings of what is important to him and revisits to his career and other important parts of his life. And it works! Of particular interest to me was the JFK Jr story both in the initial meeting and later just prior to the death of JFK Jr. This is a very touching story. Also, commented on is his outlook on acting with tidbits throughout on his approach as well as others.
Overall this is a very good introspective look by a entertainer, but more importantly, by a solid guy who has found his calling, place in the world, and apparently true happiness away from the fast lane.
especially if you haven't read his "first" autobiography.
During the eighties, Lowe was at least as famous for being a litigation as he was for his acting. In fact, although he chooses not to mention it in "Love Life," a certain video of him in bed with a very young lady caused such scandal that it threatened to bring an early end to his career. Such a story is hardly worth mention today, but at the time it was a MASSIVE deal. I'm just as certain that a number of people will pick this title up hoping for a tell-all sexploits tome as I am that the choice of the title was no accident. Anyone looking for salacious details of Hollywood debauchery will need to renew their hunt elsewhere. While Lowe doesn't whitewash his past, or deny it in any way, he apparently respects both his wife and his children too much to drag them through the sordid details of his early exploits
So what exactly does the reader get that makes "Love Life" worth the cover price? For openers, fans of Rob Lowe will find him to be surprisingly candid and open about the life mistakes he has made in life that in many ways were the underlying causes of his formerly notorious reputation. He is equally forthcoming in sharing the lessons he learned in the process of recovery from his addictive demons. As a result, though some may start this book hoping to titter at the immaturities of the Rich and Famous, those that continue to read may just come away either inspired or learning things that will help them tosurvive their own daily struggles.
Although the "real" Rob Lowe is no therapist, he has far more depth than the "super-creepy Rob Lowe" he currently plays in satellite tv ads. This is a good thing. After finishing either of his two books you almost feel that Lowe is in fact, a good family friend - warts and all. And THAT is a very good thing.
Good old Robe Lowe. Is there anything he can't do? I enjoyed his first book, Stories I only Tell My Friends, and I knew I'd enjoy his second offering. Lowe seems to be a man who has found peace and balance in a life where peace and balance are hard to find. Anyone who is as breathtakingly handsome as Lowe has a couple of strikes against him. We all expect him to be a total himbo, a narcissist party boy with a shallow intellect and a cut bod. The real Lowe is smart, funny, an astute businessman and an excellent actor whose talent has risen above his youthful pretty boy looks and party on past. Sober for years, he's happily married and the proud father of two sons. He's also a great raconteur in the tradtion of great actors like Richard Harris. His stories of his life and friends are entertaining, but never indiscreet. He doesn't write tell alls. He doesn't need to. His work is literate, entertaining and written from the heart. I always like reading what he has to say. He's the kind of guy you'd like to have lunch with, just to listen to him tell you stories about what he's seen and done.
