This was an epic "miss" for me. I had to throw in the towel a third through the book when yet another disturbed viewpoint character was introduced with no relation to the book's purported story line. I wanted to be able to relate to ONE character' story at least, not to read about one abused and abusive character after another leading massively horrific lives.

The Small Backs of Children A Novel Lidia Yuknavitch 9780062383242 Books Reviews

This is a completely unique novel, gripping, surprising, gritty and compelling from beginning to end. There aren't many novels I would give this high praise to, but Lidia Yuknavich is a writer with her own style. She creates style. The Small Back of Children is a masterpiece I cannot put down.
I can usually pick up a book and read it in just a few days but I really struggled through this one. I love a book that tells multiple stories in none, but with no names or pronouns, this one was hard to keep up with the story line. The vulgar language and amount of over the top sex chapters were way too much for me. Definitely wouldn’t recommend.
I almost stopped reading, the story was so horrific. But I finished it. I cannot recommend it to my reading buddies, but I admit that the writing was masterful.
I was amazed by this book. I have honestly never read anything like it. To address some reviews I've seen here - this book is not overly graphic (in my opinion), just unsettling at times. If you have sensitive ears, this book is not for you. But for those of us who can manage a little moral discomfort in the pursuit for art and literature, I highly recommend. The multiple endings are different, but not off-putting. And the true ending (after the multiples) is one of the best endings to a book I have read in a long time. I will never forget this book.
Hated this book for the most part. Appreciated the emotional background of "The Small Backs of Children" by Lidia Yuknavitch. Hated what happened to the children. Hated the female pornography depictions. Hated the use of arcane vocabulary by the author as a way of showing off. Very depressing book and I am to old for that crap yet somehow I ended up with 2 copies. Suzarita
At times I felt like this novel was reading me. Other times I confess I did not quite understand what was happening. Yet, the good was so good, I could easily forget the bad. The pace was quick and the unique chapter constructions kept this interesting. Most of all I loved the different emotions this book made me feel, the harsh realities it made me face...the unsettled and honest view of life the characters wrestled with.
I value wit with tragedy, so when a book goes on and on being muddy, bloody and morose, with nothing to leaven the horror, I get bored and cranky and feel like I'm literally being bruised by the writing - and I'm a writer, lol, so that's not a good feeling. I always want to support my fellow writers, because I love literature so much. Sometimes it's simply the tone of the writing, an important aspect of fiction that is rarely mentioned. Think of "Independence Day" by Richard Ford; "Affliction" by Russell Banks. Shakespeare's and Tolstoy's tragedies are often mordantly funny in parts. In fact, Anna Karenina begins with a famously amusing family scene that leads you ever so stealthily into the darkness. I am tiring of the hype these books receive that makes them seem so juicy and hard to put down. Instead, I want to throw them against a wall, because I feel I've been misled. This writer has promise. I hope her next book is one we can swallow.
This was an epic "miss" for me. I had to throw in the towel a third through the book when yet another disturbed viewpoint character was introduced with no relation to the book's purported story line.
